OzSecCon 2019 Conference Wrap Up

by | Conferences

Sorry it’s taken so long to get this post about OzSecCon 2019 up but we’ve just been really busy doing random kid stuff. Also when we were at OzSecCon we had an offer to be the keynote speakers at Kids SecuriDay in Canberra which we weren’t expecting so we had to get working on that. It was a lot of work as we only had about 6 weeks to prepare and we wanted to do some totally new research for it. We had some ideas but still had to do all the work really fast so we were pretty burnt out after that.

Day 1 – Key Impressioning and Lock Picking Workshops

This year at OzSecCon we got to go to the workshops the day before the conference. We went to two workshops: key impressioning and lock picking. Even though we have been picking locks a for a few years now we thought we might learn some more advanced techniques, like how to pick security pins. We had seen key impressioning at LockCon in the Netherlands last year but had never tried it, so we were pretty excited.

We did the lock picking workshop first. I opened a combination lock which I had never done before, and also one of the see-through locks. It was so cool opening a combination lock. I was fiddling around and then click, the combination lock opened! OPEN!

Next was lock impressioning. It’s pretty hard work filing down the key and it takes ages. I couldn’t get my lock to open.

Dad managed to get his key to work. Well.. his second key. He broke the first one in half when testing it. It was pretty funny ????

Day 2 – First Day of OzSecCon 2019 Conference

The next day was the first official day of the conference. We started the day with a mystery muffin for breakfast. It was basically a muffin from a cafe that we had no idea what was in it. Then we went to the conference.

As always, OzSecCon was awesome. We went into the tamper evident area to see what was happening and see if they had any new seals, but we decided we would only do a little bit of tamper evident this year and focus more on lockpicking. The lockpicking was awesome. I opened a cutaway lock and a couple of normals, and then some see-through locks. It was a fun first day at OzSecCon 2019.

Day 3 – Second Day of OzSecCon 2019 Conference

The next day we came back and decided we would have a go at the temper evident competition anyway. We couldn’t stay away. We had to leave the conference a bit early and at the time we were coming 4th. Congratulations to whoever got first, second and third!!!

I saw a few talks but I didn’t know the people that did them but they were really good. I also worked at the drinks and food area for a bit. I tried to serve someone a shaked up lemonade but I didn’t get away with it. That was sad ????

One of the most exciting things at OzSecCon is I had my first coke!!! Id never had one before and not sure when I will get my next one but it was awesome!!!

I gave my friends some Warhammer pictures I had drawn and we had to leave to catch our plane home. It was so sad we had to leave. But it was an awesome conference. Thanks Topy and everyone! ????

Also on Wednesday night I had dinner with my good friends and hacker fam in Melbourne for my birthday. We went to Betty’s Burgers ???? we also got ice cream ???????????? and that is it.

Mos aka MrOldSkinny, loves to hack things together whether it be hardware, software or a combination of both! When he isn’t doing crazy hacks you will find him picking locks, tampering with tamper-proof devices, and finding weaknesses in security controls. All the cybers will be his!
